To examine the influence of concurrent parasitism and nutritional conditions on host activity and social interactions, we subjected two groups of wild black capuchin monkeys (Sapajus nigritus) in Iguazu National Park, Argentina, to two-year interventions involving banana provisioning to alter food availability and antiparasitic drug treatments to modify helminth infection levels. To analyze helminthic infection intensity, we collected fecal samples, also recording data on social proximity and observable behaviors. Individuals with untreated helminth infestations foraged less efficiently than those who had been dewormed, but only in times of limited food availability. Given that THs are key determinants of metabolic rate and thermoregulation, we further examined the TH system at a molecular level in the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) and Ansell's mole-rat (Fukomys anselli), while drawing a comparison with the house mouse (Mus musculus), a well-characterized model in TH research. The most captivating finding was the low iodide levels in the thyroids of both mole-rat species, particularly evident in the naked mole-rats, which exhibited signs of thyroid gland hyperplasia. Our research, surprisingly, demonstrated species-specific differences in the thyroid hormone systems of both mole-rat species, ultimately converging on identical serum thyroid hormone concentrations. The discovered patterns suggest a potential for convergent adaptive mechanisms. Hence, our research expands the body of knowledge on adaptations to the subterranean ecosystem.
